- Takeover of the specialist Benchmark Drives
- Expansion of its commitment in the growing market for e-bikes and pedelecs
- Joint development of drive systems since 2012
ContiTech took over the developer of e-bike drives, Benchmark Drives GmbH & Co. KG (Benchmark Drives or BMD), Hofheim, and is thus further expanding its commitment in the growing market for e-bikes and pedelecs. ContiTech revealed this in Hanover today. „Benchmark Drives has outstanding development expertise in the field of e-mobility and has excellent contacts with bicycle manufacturers. With the take-over, we are strengthening our position in this important growing market and gaining quicker access to bicycle manufacturers,“ says Konrad Müller, head of the ContiTech Power Transmission Group business unit.
The drive belt specialist, ContiTech Power Transmission Group, has been developing drive systems for bicycles, pedelecs, and e-bikes together with BMD for a long time now. Last year, both companies presented a complete drive system for e-bikes and pedelecs comprising a central motor, display, control unit, and battery. This modular CONTI® eBIKE SYSTEM is positioned in the premium segment and is smaller, more powerful, and lighter than other concepts currently on the market.
Since 2012, both companies have been selling the CONTI® DRIVE SYSTEM, a drive technology for bicycles that uses a timing belt instead of the usual chain. The system thus dispenses with time-consuming oil lubrication and is therefore service-free and environmentally friendly. „The acquisition of BMD will boost sales of both systems. We also want to develop new drive systems for scooters and bicycles in order to convince manufacturers, once and for all, to use the timing belt instead of the conventional chain,“ says Konrad Müller.
Benchmark Drives stands for the development and production of high-end products. The manufacturer of drives for e-bikes and pedelecs was founded in 2010 and counts notable bicycle manufacturers among its customers. Drive systems from Benchmark Drives consist of an electric motor, rechargeable battery, control system, and display.
