21st. international biennial Interieur 08 in Kortrijk

Spanish designer Jaime Hayon guest of honour

(PresseBox) (Kortrijk/Belgium, )
For the 21st edition of the International interior biennial in Kortrijk, project coordinator Dieter Van Den Storm managed to snare the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon (°1974). The youngest and the first Spanish guest of honour ever, is known for his frivolous design and unbridled imagination. Jaime Hayon has already worked behind the scenes for six months on the project he will show in October at Interieur 08.

The biennial Interieur is an international event that each time provides an overview of the new ideas, products, creations and developments in the field of interiors. The 21st edition will be held from 17 to 26 October in the Xpo halls in Kortrijk, Belgium. Guest of honour of Interieur 08 is Jaime Hayon. This Spanish enfant terrible is considered as a trail-blazing talent in the world of design.

Jaime Hayon: “I am delighted with the opportunity that I have. Interior 08 is well known as a quality biennial event, and it is naturally nice to be part of it. Furthermore, it is an overwhelming feeling to appear on the same list as previous guests of honour such as Konstantin Grcic, James Irvine, Philippe Starck and Jasper Morisson. In short, it is a great honour to be able to do here in Kortrijk what I enjoy doing, among people who appreciate and stimulate quality. These are quite big shoes to be filled.” In the meantime, Hayon has continued working undisturbed behind the scenes on the project that he will show at the biennial in October. “Hopefully we can put on a sprightly show with the best of our work. Visitors can rest assured that they will be surprised.”

And a look of Jaime Hayon’s record of achievement (www.hayonstudio.com) will confirm as much. The Spanish designer’s creations constitute a clear break with everything going. In short, someone who fits perfectly with the “guest-of-honour” vision of Interieur. Since the first edition in 1968, an international guest has been chosen carefully for his ability to surprise, to reflect and preferably outpace the spirit of the times. Famous designers such as Raymond Loewy, Verner Paton, Andrea Branz and Jean Nouvel have in the past been given the opportunity to show their work to the public in a changing setting. This established trend will be continued further in 2008.

Project coordinator Dieter Van Den Storm has this to say about choosing Jaime Hayon: “We are living in an age when designers do more than just create furniture. Inter-disciplinary talents are this time charting the course for the design world and the future. Jaime Hayon is such a talent. I admire the way that he adapts the history of design to his needs, sometimes in a playful and funny manner, at times extravagantly too. From bathrooms and ceramics to shoes, furniture and interiors, Jaime Hayon completely fits in with the new class of creative renaissance men. And he is one of the very few who manage to do so at a high level.”

About Jaime Hayon (°1974, Madrid)

The Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. He studied industrial design in Madrid and in Paris. In 1997, he joined Fabrica, the communication laboratory of Benetton in Treviso, as a researcher. A year later, he was appointed head of the design department by Luciano Benetton and communication guru Oliviero Toscani, where he oversaw the development of shop interiors, exhibitions and restaurants as well as books, magazines and logo designs.

In 2004 he embarked on his individual career, which has since boasted quite a number of electric projects. From cult toys to furniture and interior design to artistic installations, Hayon’s work strikes a balance between art and industrial design each time in his own, inimitable style. Thus, his bathroom collection AQHayon for ArtQuitect, launched in 2005, raised a dust in the bathroom industry and the design scene. A non-commonplace collection with which he made a name for himself as a trend setting talent. As a creative jack of all trades, Jaime Hayon is today at ease in many roles: as curator, but also as artist and of course designer.

Jaime Hayon is one of the most influential designers of the moment. In recent years he has worked for companies such as ArtQuitect, BD Ediciones, Bisazza, Bosa, Lladro, Metalarte and Pallucco. In addition, he often gives his imagination free rein for Camper, Swarovski and Piper-Heidsieck. Last year, he decked the stately restaurant ‘La Terraza del Casino’ in Madrid in a vibrant light blue décor. We can expect quite a number of novelties from him in the course of the year that he will also show at Interieur 08. Next month, the book “Jaime Hayon Works,” published by “Die Gestalten Verlag,” will hit the bookshop – the first monograph that elucidates Hayon’s entire spectrum of work.

About the guests of honour

Since 1968, the turbulent inaugural year of the event, the biennial Interieur has always welcomed an international guest of honour. This selection has grown into an impressive list over the years. These designers, design critics or captains of industry have put on an idiosyncratic exhibition each time: rooms in bales straw, a peepshow or modern chalets. An experience and discovery for the public, Jaime Hayon is the first Spanish guest of honour, as well as the youngest one ever.

• Interieur 08 press conference
The international press conference at which the entire programme of Interieur 08 is unveiled will be held on Thursday, 5 June in Brussels. More information to follow.

• Team 08
After a successful commemorative edition in 2006 – 98,000 visitors and 300 international exhibitors – project coordinator Dieter Van Den Storm will steer Interieur 08 in the right direction once again. He can count on the support of Colette Deceuninck, director of the Interieur Foundation, and Stephanie Delatter, project assistant. The team behind Interieur 08 is young and motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic. Dieter Van Den Storm is responsible for the programme; architects Caroline Voet & Jeroen Theuns, of Voet Theuns Architecten, are in charge of the general layout, and Saskia Wierinck of Barlock for the graphic design.

• Interieur 06 tunnel in the prizes
Xile, the impressive tunnel that connected Hall 4 with Hall 5 during the 20th biennial in 2006, won a prize at the recent Stockholm Design Week (6 – 10 February). The Swedish designer Mats Karlsson won the Forum AID Award 2008 in the Interior Design category. The Xile tunnel was shown for the first time outside Sweden at Interieur. Karlsson worked painstakingly for ten days to build this gigantic 40 metre long tunnel – the first time, in fact, that he built this flexible tunnel on such a large scale.

• Design Competition Interieur 08 is open
For the 19th time, the Interior Foundation is organising its own prototype competition. Better known as ‘Design for Europe,” the Design Competition relies on three themes to focus on new, functional, creative and contemporary prototypes. An international jury studies the results and passes critical judgement. This jury consists of Louise Campbell (DK), Marnick Smessaert (BE), and Oscar Peña (CO/NL), Adam Goodrum (AU) and Alasdhair Willis (UK). The stakes? A total of €35,000 in prize money and a great deal of honour to earn. But above all, the international competition is the perfect platform to be discovered. No fewer than 26 international magazines from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russia, Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States support this competition worldwide.

• The young designers fair
The Interieur Foundation welcomed young international talent for the fourth time in a row at ‘the young designers fair’ during Interieur 08.
