Zur Längenmessung in Landschaftsplanung und Bauwirtschaft, bei Sicherheitssystemen und Produktionskontrollen, aber auch bei Navigationshilfen für Schiffe und Flugzeuge dient die Laufzeit eines Laserstrahls. Gemessen wird die Zeit zwischen Einschalten und Registrieren des reflektierten Laserstrahls im Messgerät. Einziger Nachteil der Messmethode ist die hohe Geschwindigkeit, mit der sich das Licht ausbreitet. In nur einer Mikrosekunde (Millionstelsekunde) legt es 300 Meter zurück. Dies stellt hohe Anforderungen an die Zeitauflösung der Messelektronik. So benötigt man für eine Messgenauigkeit von 15 Zentimetern eine zeitliche Auflösung von 1 Nanosekunde. Je genauer man die Entfernung messen will, umso höher steigt der elektronische Aufwand bei der Zeitmessung.
