Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves will allow all diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions following the introduction of the Euro 5 emission standards. The EGR process consists of recirculating hot exhaust gases into the engine’s cylinders, which lowers the combustion temperature in the engine and reduces the development of nitrogen oxides.

The great disadvantage of exhaust gas recirculation, however, is the technical vulnerability of the EGR valve used to feed the exhaust gas back into the combustion air flow.
