Die Geoinformationstechnologie zählt neben der Nano- und der Biotechnologie zu den wichtigsten Querschnittstechnologien des 21. Jahrhunderts. Seit Jahren gelingt der Branche Geoinformationswirtschaft der Durchbruch in immer neue Wirtschaftszweige und Geschäftsfelder.
Die als Querschnittsbranche geltende Geoinformationswirtschaft birgt Milliardenpotenziale: Eine Studie des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie ermittelte acht Milliarden Euro Wertschöpfungspotenzial allein aus der wirtschaftlichen Nutzung staatlicher Geoinformationen. Der Umsatz der Geoinformationswirtschaft in Deutschland wurde laut der Studie mit ca. 1,2 Milliarden Euro im Jahr 2002 beziffert, rund 16.000 direkt Beschäftigte arbeiteten in diesem Sektor. Die Tendenz ist steigend. Die Geoinformationstechnologie hat das Potenzial, Industrie und Wirtschaft zu revolutionieren.
Der Kongress "GeoBusiness 2006" widmet sich heutigen und zukünftigen Einsatzfeldern der Technologie. Unter dem Leitmotiv "Erfolg mit GeoWissen" richtet sich der Kongress an Entscheidungsträger aus Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Verwaltung. Der Kongress zeigt in Vorträgen zu den Themenblöcken Wirtschaftsförderung, Standortplanung, Logistik und Transport und Ver- und Entsorgung, welche Vorzüge die Branche für Wirtschaft und Verwaltung bringt. Die auf dem Kongress "GeoBusiness 2006" vorgestellten Projekte zeigen die Bandbreite des Einsatzes von Geo-Informationstechnologien und Geo-Daten. Sie reichen von Anwendungen in der Kredit- und Immobilienwirtschaft, über den Einzelhandel und die Wirtschaftsförderung bis zum Katastrophen- und Klimaschutz. Auch die Entwicklung von 3D-Stadtmodellen zum Stadtmarketing wird präsentiert.
