This video is a good example for an optical illusion. It shows the best illusion of the year by Kohichi Sugihara from the “Illusion of the Year Contest 2016“:

The human eye can hardly recognize why one and the same object appears to be sections of circles while in the other view sections of rectangles. If you could hold the objects in your hands you would immediately figure out the trick: The cylinders don’t have straight edges, they are corrugated - the top of the sides are wave patterns, two sides dip up and two sides dip down. The combination of the object’s structure and the perspective lead to an illusion for the eyes, since they try to compensate for the wave pattern.
Find similar components with the Geometric Similarity Search GEOsearch
Also when designing, one always needs a good eye and different parts. When looking for a suitable 3D CAD model, it is usually not possible to touch it, so you need other tools to figure out differences. Good if tools are available that cannot be fooled, like CADENAS’ Geometric Similarity Search GEOsearch from the Strategic Parts Management PARTsolutions. This search feature looks for parts by means of the respective CAD geometry and compares them to each other. Starting with a reference part or a roughly sketched 3D model, all existing CAD components of the parts database can be searched just like with a search engine.

Not only in the Strategic Parts Management PARTsolutions and the 3D CAD model download portal PARTcommunity offers Geometric Similarity Search: Also with CADENAS’ exchange platform for parts, PARTcloud.net, you now have the option to find CAD models by means of similar geometric data.
