Quality is Everyone's Business - Part 1: The Challenge

The great Edward Deming once said, 'Quality is everyone's responsibility.' For manufacturers quality and its management needs to be a continuous and organization-wide endeavor, which is seamless and flows from process to process and vertical to vertical.

The word which is particularly important in context of modern manufacturing is 'seamless', especially since the modern organizations are more and more dependent on a combination of IT applications for operating. Achieving seamless quality can be a challenge for modern manufacturers and the biggest pitfall may be having two separate systems for managing operations and quality. It is important that organizations realize that to make quality everyone's business and to have seamless quality management, IT applications must play an extremely critical role.

Today we will explore how modern IT savvy organizations may embed quality in all areas of their operation and in the series of articles to come we will see how crucial the role of MES/MOM applications can play in this endeavor.

Quality is a multilayered and multifaceted word, and the way quality is perceived depends a lot on the product itself and the overall value it adds to this final product. Say for a product like a pacemaker the most important aspect of quality would obviously be its reliability and durability, someone's life actually depends on it, but for a decorative chandelier or center piece, its aesthetics and workmanship would constitute the way its quality is evaluated. For the manufacturer of both products, the quest for delivering quality would begin right from sourcing the correct material, up until delivering the product as required by the end customer, maintaining required compliance and operations standard, throughout the entire manufacturing and service/product delivery process.

Irrespective of the product being manufactured, quality should be given importance by all members of the organization and should be a part of all activities and processes.

Now, in theory the above statement definitely sounds right. Practically though, the story may be a little different...
