The process for selecting Award winners is determined by the EO Award Team. After thorough review of applications, finalists are selected and asked to provide more detailed information about their programs. Award recipients are then selected based on the following criteria: technical merit and innovative use of optics in a research setting or lab. Award recipients from 2012 hailed in the US from Rice University, Indiana University, and Harvey Mudd College; from the University of Zurich, University of Marburg, and Vienna University in Europe; and Nanyang Technological University, Osaka University, and National Yang-Ming University in Asia. The scope of the research projects ranged from developing new techniques in biological imaging and cellular resolution imaging of the living animal to better understand fundamental questions of brain function and dysfunction to focusing a pulse laser to cause laser-induced breakdown to create non-equilibrium plasma that can ignite flammable mixed gas in biofuels.
