Epson Introduces High-Frequency Differential-Output PLL-Based Crystal Oscillators that Support Frequencies Up to 700 MHz

(PresseBox) (Munich, )
Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, "Epson") today introduces a new family of small, accurate, high-frequency differential-output [1] PLL-based [2] crystal oscillators that support frequencies up to 700 MHz. In addition to the SG3225, whose tiny 3.2 mm x 2.5 mm footprint will enable electronics manufacturers to significantly reduce the size of assembled circuit boards, the product family also includes the SG5032 and SG7050, which come in popular sizes of 5.0 x 3.2 mm and 7.0 x 5.0 mm, respectively.

Networking, consumer, and industrial electronic systems must all handle higher data rates in less space, often without forced-air cooling. As a result, crystal devices must operate at higher frequencies with better accuracy and lower jitter and these devices must be smaller and operate over a wide temperature range. These needs cover a wide field of applications from consumer, networking, wireless base stations, blade servers [3], and the growing Internet of Things (IoT).

In order to meet these market demands, Epson combined its miniature quartz crystals with PLL ICs to develop this family of differential-output PLL-based crystal oscillators. With a frequency tolerance of +/-20 ×10-6 and low phase jitter of 270 femtoseconds [4], these oscillators offer outstanding accuracy and stability and have a wide operating temperature range (-40°to +85°C). The SG3225, SG5032, and SG7050 are available in two popular output types, LV-PECL and LVDS.

As a leader in crystal devices, Epson will continue to provide the kind of small, accurate, stable products that electronics and social infrastructure require.

Glossary

[1] Differential output: Differential signals are used for high-frequency clock and data signals to achieve good signal integrity and high noise immunity.
[2] PLL: Phase Locked Loop. A circuit or IC that can create an output frequency locked to an input frequency and scaled by a ratio set by a divider.
[3] Blade server: A server that houses multiple thin, modular circuit boards called "blades," each of which is a server in its own right, in the same chassis.
[4] Typical measurement at an offset frequency of 12 kHz to 20 MHz in 156.25 MHz LVDS output.
