Almost all metals occur naturally as oxides or other compounds. Technically exploitable metals are produced from these by adding energy. As a result, a higher, unstable level of energy is achieved artificially. However, due to the fact that all materials tend towards the lowest possible energy level, corrosion is fundamentally unavoidable; it can only be delayed – in some cases for several hundred years. This offers significant potential for reducing costs, as well as for increasing the operating safety of products, systems and components for numerous industries. Answers to questions regarding how this potential can be exploited will be provided by COROSAVE exhibitors including, amongst others, Bantleon, W. Bosch, Excor and Henkel und Surtec at the Stuttgart Exhibition Centre from the 20th through the 22nd of October, 2009. As an international presentation, information and procurement platform, the trade fair provides users from the automotive industry, commercial vehicle manufacturing, machinery and equipment manufacturing, metalworking, medical engineering and electronics, aviation and aerospace, energy and process engineering, shipbuilding, the construction industry and all other sectors for which corrosion protection is important, with a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art and current developments.
Counteracting Corrosion in a Targeted Fashion with the Right Methods
Two active partners are always required before corrosion can occur: The material which corrodes and the corrosive medium which attacks it. As regards the various methods for counteracting corrosion, we generally differentiate between active and passive, as well as permanent and temporary corrosion protection. In the case of active corrosion protection, the parameters which result in corrosion are influenced. This is accomplished, for example, by developing corrosion resistant alloys and by adding inhibitors to the corrosive medium. As opposed to this, passive corrosion protection involves the use of an isolating layer between the material and the corrosive medium. Protective layers, foils and other coatings can be used to this end.
Permanent corrosion protection methods, for example tin plating, galvanising, enamelling and copper plating, are intended to protect products or components from corrosion on-site during actual use. Temporary corrosion protection serves to provide protection during production, transport and storage of workpieces and components. Temporary corrosion protection is one of the main focal points at COROSAVE.
Temporary Corrosion Protection – an Indispensable Process Step
Temporary preservation by means of oily, aqueous and waxy substances protects the material for a duration of several hours to two years, depending upon the selected corrosion protection medium and how thickly it’s applied. It makes most sense to apply this type of preservative while the parts are in the cleaning system. Which processes the parts will be subjected to after preservation is a critical factor in selecting the right medium. Being able to easily remove the corrosion protection medium prior to further process steps is an additional criterion, because it may impair surface finishing results.
If a lengthy period of storage or transport is required, longer term protection must be applied. For example, desiccants and barrier materials (multi-layer aluminium foil) are commonly used to this end, which assure corrosion protection by binding residual atmospheric humidity within the packaging. VCI materials represent a possible alternative (volatile corrosion inhibitors). They’re available as powders, liquids, chips, foils and paper. A protective atmosphere is created inside the package by continuously giving off extremely small quantities of the utilised inhibitor. After the VCI material has been removed, the inhibitors evaporate and no more protection is provided. The inhibitors don’t leave any residues on the components.

Visitors will thus be provided with the opportunity of gathering information regarding solutions for two important production and maintenance tasks with a single trade fair visit.
