IBM Expands Enterprise Storage Line

New Disk Array Features and Tape Products Reduce Costs and Increase Flexibility

(PresseBox) (ORLANDO, )
At the opening of Storage Networking World, IBM today announced an expansion of its enterprise line of disk arrays, including the introduction of a new flexible choice warranty option, while also adding new models to its enterprise tape portfolio that includes the world’s first 700 GB physical capacity linear tape media. The new products further IBM’s lead in providing customers with the broadest range of storage offerings, from tape to disk.

As part of today’s announcement, IBM is introducing the IBM HyperPAV feature for the IBM System Storage DS8000 Turbo storage server to help clients reduce overall administrative workloads. Currently exclusive to IBM, the HyperPAV is an on demand, automated allocation of aliases for z/OS environments. Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) represent a significant performance improvement by the storage unit over traditional I/O processing. HyperPAV is designed to provide a more efficient PAV function and to help customers who implement larger volumes to scale I/O rates without the need for additional PAV-alias definitions.

In addition, the IBM System Storage DS8000 Turbo will now be available with a new flexible Enterprise Choice warranty, which allows clients to choose 24/7 warranty options in one-year increments from one year to four years. The System Storage DS8000 was previously available only with a four-year warranty. The new enterprise choice warranty provides customers with increased pricing flexibility, while further extending the DS8000’s total cost of ownership leadership. All options include support for hardware, software, parts and labor.

“IBM is dedicated to delivering the latest technology innovation to its enterprise storage products,” said Charlie Andrews, director, system storage products marketing. “The features announced today are designed to allow customers to achieve their overall business objectives by providing a more flexible, cost effective and scalable IT infrastructure. In particular, the enterprise choice warranty will be welcome by customers, because it covers not only the hardware, but also the software sold with the IBM System Storage DS8000 for the length of the warranty, which is in sharp contrast to EMC’s potentially costly piecemeal software maintenance charges.”

In addition to the HyperPAV feature and the new enterprise choice warranty option for the IBM System Storage DS8000 product line, the DS8300 Turbo four-way model 932 will now include an option for greater scalability by expanding capacity with 60 percent more drives. With support for third and fourth expansion frames, a single DS8300 system will allow for up to 512 terabytes of physical capacity.

The IBM System Storage DS8000 Turbo with enterprise choice warranty will be available on November 17, 2006, with a starting list price of $178,000.

Expansion of IBM Enterprise Tape Products
IBM is also announcing today six new models of the IBM System Storage 3599 Tape Media, the first tape media to feature 700 GB physical capacity, by far the largest linear physical capacity available in the market, and a 40 percent increase over the previous model. Designed for applications such as back up and restore, archiving, and those requiring security or an audit trail, the 3599 Tape Media Models include WORM format and are supported by the encryption capability in the IBM System Storage TS1120 Model E05 Tape Drive. The 3599 tape media may be integrated into the TS3500 Tape Library, the 3494 Tape Library, the Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3592 Model C20 and into standalone environments.

The IBM System Storage 3599 Tape Media Models with 700 GB physical capacity will be generally available on January 26, 2007 with a starting price of $5,400 for a 20-cartridge pack.
