Die von der PC-WELT veranstaltete Freeware-EM fand parallel zur UEFA Europameisterschaft 2008 statt. Dabei hatte die PC-WELT-Redaktion stellvertretend für jedes Teilnehmerland ein passendes Tool ausgesucht, die während der Spielzeit aufeinander trafen. Die PC-WELT.de-User konnten per Abstimmung die Sieger der einzelnen Partien ermitteln. Deutschland, vertreten durch das Gratis-Tool "Clipinc" zum Aufzeichnen von Radioprogrammen, war im Viertelfinale der Freeware-EM gegen die Schweiz ausgeschieden.
An der Freeware-EM auf PC-WELT.de hatten sich rund 1.400 registrierte Nutzer beteiligt. Dabei wurden unter den Mitspielern Sachpreise im Gesamtwert von fast 700 Euro verlost.
