Der Preis ist nach dem früheren DIHK-Präsidenten, dem Unternehmer und Kunstmäzen Ernst Schneider benannt. Über die Vergabe entscheiden unabhängige fünfköpfige Jurys, zusammengesetzt aus jeweils drei Angehörigen der Medien und zwei Vertretern der Wirtschaft.
