A future economy may include many strategies and approaches, referred to as Bioeconomy, Green Economy, CO2 as raw material, “Zero Waste”, Circular Economy / “Cradle to Cradle”, Recycling (mechanical, chemical), Hydrogen Economy, and Industrial Biotechnology, the latter as a potentially gentle and environmentally friendly conversion method.
All these efforts are outstanding, useful and necessary. However, none of these strategies is complete and none can constitute a comprehensive guideline for a future viable economy on its own. What is apparently missing, is an underlying principle or a ‘unifying element’ that combines the positive aspects of all these strategies. This principle can only be “sustainability” with its three pillars: efficiency, consistency, sufficiency. All ambitions and approaches must suffice these claims.
ISEF enables the exchange of actors of sustainable economy across the boundaries of industrial sectors and provides space for discussion and exchange to scrutinize the different approaches according to the criteria of sustainability, to identify barriers for stakeholders in implementation and to propose measures to solve them. As a result, ISEF aims to formulate policies required to advance a sustainable economy.
