Ralf Steinemann, CEO of iTernity, explains: "We are completely offsetting our CO2 footprint from 2020 and want to repeat this step every year from now on in order to operate in a climate-neutral manner. As iTernity, we are well positioned, but have already found improvements for the future when calculating our footprint. We want and need to continue to raise this awareness."
iTernity's total CO2 consumption in 2020 was 18,910 kg CO2. To compensate for inaccuracies and fluctuations, a 5% markup was applied, bringing the total emissions to 19,856 kg CO2. According to the EcoCockpit calculator of the Effizienz-Agentur NRW, this corresponds to a forest area of approximately three soccer fields or 1,986 trees.
From now on, iTernity wants to calculate and compensate this CO2 footprint annually. With a payment of €195 per ton of CO2, iTernity is following the recommendation of the German Federal Environment Agency and is thus well above the CO2 price recommended by compensation providers. For 2020, this results in an offset contribution of €3,871.92. With the rounded-up amount of €4,000, the software manufacturer supports one global and one regional climate protection project:
- 3,000€ go to an Atmosfair project that will enable a 2.9 megawatt solar installation on Madagascar, replacing the burning of 1,300,000 liters of heavy oil per year.
- €1,000 go to NatureOffice and will be used to offset the calculated CO2 emissions as well as for the DeutschlandPlus-Project, which realizes different activities like reforestation, biotope care, rewetting of upland moors, and forest care in the Black Forest.
