Magnetic Cooling Market-Ready: Commercial Refrigerator Launches in Germany

A sustainable milestone in cooling technology: energy-efficient and resource-saving refrigeration for supermarkets and beyond.

(PresseBox) (Darmstadt, )
MAGNOTHERM, a company headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany, launched a groundbreaking product on November 7th, 2024: the ECLIPSE 2D, a commercial refrigerator with a capacity of 1.110 liters that cools entirely without the use of refrigerants. This launch represents a monumental step toward sustainable and safe refrigeration in the commercial sector and beyond.

The ECLIPSE 2D is a two-door vertical cabinet refrigerator that operates using magnetic cooling technology. This innovative cooling approach leverages magnetocaloric materials, which heat up when magnetised and cool down when demagnetised. Using a water-based fluid to transfer the temperature, magnetic cooling adds a low-noise and non-hazardous alternative to the portfolio of sustainable cooling technologies.

Product Highlights

The ECLIPSE 2D comes with a host of unique selling points that make it ideal for commercial and industrial applications:
  • Refrigerant-Free Cooling: ECLIPSE 2D does not rely on refrigerants, offering a cooling solution with zero direct global warming potential and free of PFAS.
  • Safety First: The system uses a water-based solution as the heat transfer fluid, ensuring it is non-explosive, non-flammable, non-toxic, and compliant with current and anticipated environmental regulations.
  • Low Maintenance & Cost-Effective: Magnetic cooling is inherently lowmaintenance and operates efficiently at pressure levels below 1 bar, offering operational cost savings and hassle-free upkeep for businesses. EN 378 is not applicable.
  • Circularity by design: Designed with the cradle-to-cradle approach in mind, ECLIPSE 2D supports a closed-loop recycling and reusing concept, reducing waste and supporting a circular economy.
  • Energy Efficiency: The technology is more energy efficient than traditional systems, which will help customers further reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy bills.
Pre-Orders and Availability

Starting now, MAGNOTHERM is accepting pre-orders for the ECLIPSE 2D. The units are being manufactured in Germany, with availability across Europe and beyond. The Bigger Picture
MAGNOTHERM’s mission goes beyond introducing a new product; it aims to decarbonise the cooling industry, which is responsible for more than 7% of global CO2 equivalent emissions. With ECLIPSE 2D, the company lays the foundation for magnetic cooling technology to be applied widely in the cooling sector. This launch is part of MAGNOTHERM’s broader goal to empower policymakers and the commercial sector with a safe, PFAS-free, and economically viable cooling technology option and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

About the Expert Forum and Product Launch Event

The launch event began with a MAGNOTHERM-hosted expert forum in Darmstadt. The event consisted of panel and keynote speeches from industry-leading experts in sustainable cooling, including Marc Chasserot (ATMOsphere), Dr. Kilian Bartholomé (Fraunhofer IPM), Ian McPhee (Impact Australia), Timur Sirman, and Dr. Max Fries (both MAGNOTHERM). In attendance were industry leaders interested in taking tangible steps to build the future of the cooling industry. Later, at MAGNOTHERM’s headquarters, the ECLIPSE 2D’s capabilities and potential were demonstrated and pre-orders officially opened.
