Zunächst ist nur eine Limousine geplant, eine Kombiversion soll es zunächst nicht geben, so Skoda-Vertriebsvorstand Jürgen Stackmann. "Exakt einen Kombi sehe ich nicht. Außerhalb von Europa spielt diese Karosserieform ohnehin keine so große Rolle." Zudem verfüge Skoda über genügend Kombi-Modelle.
Der Rapid wird eine vollwertige, 4,50 Meter lange Limousine mit moderner Technik und den zentralen Sicherheitsmerkmalen wie ABS, ESP und Airbags. Wie beim Roomster nutzen die Skoda-Ingenieure Module aus dem VW-Baukasten. Neben großen Teilen der Fabia-Architektur soll beim Rapid die bewährte Verbundlenker-Hinterachse zum Einsatz kommen, die auch unter der US-Version des VW Jetta steckt. Diese wurde aus Kostengründen technisch abgespeckt, um in Nordamerika mit den günstigen Limousinen von Hyundai preislich mithalten zu können, die in den USA nur gut 15.000 Dollar kosten.
Der Rapid für den europäischen Markt erhält als Basismotor den modernen, aufgeladenen 1.2 TSI mit 85 oder 105 PS. Selbst der Einbau des neuen Einliter-Dreizylinders aus dem Kleinstwagen VW Up sei nicht ausgeschlossen, heißt es bei Skoda. Das Benzinmotoren-Programm dürfte der 1.4 TSi mit 122 PS abrunden.
Bei den Dieseln werden die Kunden wohl zwischen einem 1.6 TDI mit 105 und einem 2.0 TDI mit 140 PS wählen können. Doch selbst das ist nach Informationen von AUTOStraßenverkehr noch nicht entschieden. "Wir müssen sicherstellen, dass der Rapid nicht Octavia-Kunden anlockt", sagt ein Skoda-Mitarbeiter, der in das Projekt involviert ist. "Mehr als 140 PS wird es nicht geben, eventuell sogar viel weniger."
Der Rapid soll vor allem preissensible Kunden überzeugen, die bislang einen Hyundai, Chevrolet oder Dacia gekauft haben. Die Wettbewerber unterbietet der Rapid deutlich: Ein Chevrolet Cruze kostet ab 14.990 Euro.
