Im Gegensatz zu schweren stationären Industrierobotern, die schon allein wegen der benötigten Schutzeinrichtungen nur aufwändig zu integrieren sind, kann der Katana 450 schnell und ohne spezielles Werkzeug neu positioniert werden. Mit weniger als fünf Kilogramm Gewicht ist der Knickarmroboter dabei so handlich, dass er von einer Person problemlos getragen werden kann. Mit wenigen Schrauben am Handlingplatz fixiert, muss der Katana nur noch ans Stromnetz oder eine Batterie angeschlossen werden und ist am neuen Arbeitsplatz wieder betriebsbereit.
Während herkömmliche Industrieroboter eine Kabel- oder Funkverbindung zu einem externen Computer brauchen, ist der Katana 450 auch softwareseitig autonom. Die hochmoderne Steuerung des Katana 450 ermöglicht einen echten Stand-alone-Betrieb. Das Controlboard ist wahlweise in den Roboter integriert oder als separate Controlbox erhältlich und steuert sowohl den Greifarm als auch angeschlossene Komponenten wie den Greifer. Die auf Linux basierende Steuerung unterstützt sowohl die Scriptsprache Python als auch Ajax-Engines. Eine als Open Source mitgelieferte C++-Bibliothek erleichtert darüber hinaus das Programmieren der Steuerung. Alternativ kann der Katana 450 auch mittels einer umfangreichen und komfortablen GUI-basierten Steuerungs- und Programmiersoftware per Teach-In die neue Aufgabe lernen.
Zusammen mit den serienmäßigen Schnittstellen wie digitalen Ein- und Ausgängen, ModBus TCP/IP, USB und Ethernet kann der Katana 450 komfortabel und einfach mit Aktoren, Sensoren, SPS oder Eingabe- und Speichergeräten kommunizieren. So kann ein Programm beispielsweise per USB-Stick in den Roboter überspielt oder die Anwendungen mit einem angeschlossen Controlpad gesteuert werden. Durch das integrierte Webinterface und die programmierbaren Webservices lässt sich das Controlboard außerdem fernsteuern.
