Cannabinoids are unique compounds of the cannabis plant that can be used for a wide range of diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, loss of appetite and nausea during chemotherapy, epilepsy, chronic pain diseases, severe depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or chronic inflammatory diseases.
However, the cannabinoids THC and CBD exist in the cannabis plant mostly under the form of the so called carboxylic acids. Heating converts the THC acids (THCA) into phenolic THC, and the CBD-carboxylic acid (CBDA) into phenolic CBD (so called “decarboxylation”). Most of the therapeutic effects of these compounds are only exerted by the phenolic THC and CBD. A few seconds at high temperatures are sufficient for this process to occur. However, at lower temperatures, the heating time required increases to minutes or hours. Nonetheless, if THC is heated for too long, it will further be oxidized into cannabinol (CBN), which only exerts insignificant pharmacological effects
MCD’s newest lecture on cannabis as medicine explains the best ways to ‚activate’ cannabinoids in order to achieve the highest effect out of its medicinal compounds. Medical Cannabis Declaration (MCD) kicked off a crowdfunding campaign at the platform Indiegogo to finance videos and online lectures in the ten most spoken languages of the world for its information campaign. So far the crowdfunding raised nearly 20,000 $ with the campaign running for another four days.
One of the campaign’s goals is to give patients better access to reliable information on cannabis as medicine. Still, only 10 out of 200 countries in the world grant their citizens access to cannabis for medical use. Another 20 countries established regulations that make cannabis as medicine accessible only in a few special cases, while in more than 150 countries legal access to this treatment remains unavailable.
