The "Embedded Automotive Multi-Core Systems" was the first top-class conference with leading OEM and TIER1 specialists like BMW, Audi, Bosch, and Continental, processor and operating system vendors as well as tool supplier.
They were engaged in discussions and presentations on how to successfully migrate from single-core to multi-core technology and the possible challenges arising with that. The conference was initiated by Timing-Architects, supplier of development tools for embedded multi-core systems and also sponsored of two partner companies, iSystem AG and Elektrobit Automotive GmbH. The Conference took place in Sindelfingen from the 16th - 18th of September 2014.
Mastering and Overcoming the Challenges
After a short welcome and get together the first big topic "Overcoming Multi-Core Challenges" was addressed by the chairman Dr. Michael Deubzer, CEO of Timing-Architects and other experts from key automotive companies. Hereby the presentations dealt with historical background on the multi-core challenge and an outlook on what will happen within the industry in the future. Speakers from Audi and BMW provided a deep insight in the collaborative software development and the large scale software integration with domain oriented automotive E-Systems. The other participants were encouraged to share their knowledge in between and were actively engaged in the panel discussion, e.g. on collaboration models between TIER1s and OEMs for multi-core projects. The evening was rounded off nicely with a dinner and get-together at a traditional well-known restaurant "Funzel" located downtown Sindelfingen.
Successful Utilization and Optimization of Multi-Core Systems
The second day of the conference followed the theme of sharing experiences with the application and optimization of multi-core systems. In that day's panel session representatives from Continental, Bosch, BMW, and TÜV SÜD Automotive were ready to answer every question on the topic of setting frameworks for the development of multi-core systems. In their own respectively talk they informed attendees about specific topics, such as AUTOSAR and AMALTHEA. All the members of the conference were able to discuss any burning issue during a question & answer-session and afterwards with experts of Timing-Architects in the exhibition area of the conference. For those ones that were interested in the multi-core solution "TA Tool Suite", Technical Consultants showed tool demos and mass-project relevant multi-core application cases.
Foundation of Multi-Core Software Engineering
In the workshop on multi-core software engineering at the last day of the conference the participants worked together on several topics relating to multi-core projects. The workshop offered a content-mix between theoretical approaches and industrial solution, like the TA Tool Suite. Members received helpful tips in software design for boosting their projects, a market overview of proven technologies and solution, and on how to gain system knowledge to explore full potential of the system. In the second part, a "Meet the Experts" session, experts of Timing-Architects, iSYSTEM and Elektrobit gave insight in current challenges and provided advice how to overcome the starting problems with multi-core software development.
Where does the future lead us?
The Automotive Embedded Multi-Core Systems conference showed that the change towards multi-core technology in the automotive industry and also in other industries is unstoppable. It will overtake us, if we do not altercate with the subject of multi-core. Challenges that will arise due to the migration to multi-core can be tackled if companies work together and share their knowledge, which the conference gave a perfect opportunity for.
Dr. Michael Deubzer, CEO of Timing-Architects and chairman of the conference was pleased with the outcome of the conference and hopes to even enlarge the conference next year.
"The conference gave us the opportunity to address the needs of the Industry and to exchange knowledge with other companies and specialists. In the many discussions we had during the conference, all participants shared their experience with the technology and we worked on a common way to master the challenges. I hope that more companies accept the need and the benefits of multi-core systems and participate in next year's conference".
