Die Ausstellung im Foyer des Gebäudes 42 wird faszinierende 3D-Bilder vom Mars in Großformat und höchster Auflösung zeigen, die von der deutschen High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) an Bord der europäischen Raumsonde Mars Express aufgenommen wurden. Ergänzt wird die Ausstellung durch vielfältige Informationen über den Mars und seine Monde Phobos und Deimos sowie die Erforschung des Roten Planeten und die Mission Mars der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation ESA.
Die Ausstellung ist eine Initiative der Raumfahrt-Agentur des DLR und wurde bereits von mehr als einer halben Million Besuchern in Deutschland, bei den Vereinten Nationen in Österreich und New York, in Japan und den Vereinigten Staaten gesehen. Für Schulklassen werden Führungen angeboten werden.
Zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung wird der deutsche Astronaut Thomas Reiter in einem öffentlichen Vortrag am Mittwoch, den 13. Mai 2009, 15.00 Uhr, Audimax, Geb. 42, zum Thema "Faszination Raumfahrt - Die Mission Astrolab" über die Faszination des Weltraums sprechen.
Reiter war bei seinen beiden Raumfahrt-Missionen insgesamt 350 Tage im Weltall und umrundete 5.525 Mal die Erde. Er ist damit der erfahrenste unter den europäischen Astronauten.
