„Am Ausgang dieses wunderbaren Verbundprojekts steht ein neues Verständnis der Amerikanischen Reisetagebücher Alexander von Humboldts“, sagt Prof. Dr. Ottmar Ette, Leiter des Teilprojekts „Genealogie, Chronologie, Epistemologie“ an der Universität Potsdam. „Doch auch die Entstehung der Humboldtschen Wissenschaft in ihrer ungeheuren Bedeutung für unser heutiges Verständnis von Natur und Kultur erscheint nun in einem neuen Licht“, ergänzt der Romanist.
Der Natur- und Kulturforscher Alexander von Humboldt hat die Kartographie wesentlich geprägt. Dabei reflektierte er die historischen und technischen Dimensionen der Mittel, die seiner Zeit zur Wissensproduktion und Wissenskommunikation zur Verfügung standen und tauschte sich sowohl mit anderen Forschern wie auch mit Künstlern aus. Für sein Vorgehen, das heute in vielerlei Hinsicht anschlussfähig ist, wurde rückblickend der Begriff der „Humboldtian Science“ eingeführt.
Das Symposion wird Fragen der Landschaft und Kartographie im Sinne dieser Humboldtschen Wissenschaft beleuchten. Die Schauspielerin Anna Stieblich liest unter der Überschrift „Humboldts Landschaften“ Texte des Philosophen und Gelehrten. Prof. Dr. Ette spricht über „Die Geburt der Landschaft aus dem Geiste der Theorie. Alexander von Humboldts Amerikanische Reisetagebücher“. Weitere Vorträge befassen sich etwa mit Humboldts Darstellung der Erdrinde, kartographischen Zeichnungen oder der Verbindung von Landschaft und Sklaverei. Der Eintritt ist frei, eine Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich.
