Generally speaking, M12 is the most widely utilised connection technology at the field level in control engineering. Users are totally familiar with this connection technology - a point that also applies to the field of Ethernet solutions. All leading IE organisations and associations have agreed on D-coded mating faces for M12 connection technology as part of their endeavours to harmonise IP67-rated connection technology in Industrial Ethernet. Without exception, the Profibus Users Organisation (Profinet), the Ethernet Powerlink Standardization Group ((Ethernet Powerlink), Modbus IDA (Modbus) and ODVA (Ethernet/IP) all favour M12, D-coded connection technology. However, it should be pointed out that these groups favour different variants in accordance with ISO IEC 61076-3-106 for RJ45 connections.
Weidmüller can rightly claim a comprehensive M12, D-coded IE portfolio. As well as embracing managed/unmanaged M12 switches it also includes universal modules, M12 connecting cables, M12-RJ45 adapters available in two versions as electrical-cabinet interfaces, an M12-M12 coupler as well as PCB connection components (THT/THR) and also contains a variety of plug-in connectors for on-site termination. The more essential characteristics of the M12, D-coded connection technology are: High protection class rating to EN 60529, four-core connection and compactly designed terminal dimensions. The connection or more precisely the mating face is detailed in ISO IEC 61076-2-101.
Facilitating tool-free on-site termination of four-core Ethernet cables, Weidmüller's M12 connectors have been designed to meet requirements in the field (IP67). Quick and easy to terminate, these connectors (Cat. 5) have an M12, D-coded mating face, are available as both straight and angled types and, in addition, they can also be ordered as pin or socket versions. Weidmüller has the following four versions on offer: Pin or socket versions, straight type, nickel-plated brass; pin version, straight type, stainless steel (IP 69k) as well as an angled type, pin version, nickel-plated brass; all variants with tension clamp connections.
Weidmüller's adapters and M12 coupler (Cat. 5 in each instance) are also rated to protection class IP67 when connected. Adapters and M12 couplers are utilised when an M12 cable needs to be routed to the electrical cabinet or two M12 cables joined together. Two adapter versions are available: Angled or straight adapters to combine M12 sockets with RJ45 sockets to facilitate mounting in the wall of the electrical cabinet. The coupler version sees two M12 sockets joined by a straight styled coupler, which can either be mounted on supporting surfaces or without support as required.
Weidmüller's M12 PCB connection components (THT/THR) to Cat. 5 specifications have been developed to support the installation of electrical devices in the field and facilitate connection of M12 connectors with a D-coded mating face. When not connected, the PCB connection components are rated to IP20. The programme has two versions on offer: M12 socket for assembly on the PCB and an M12 socket that has been designed to be physically snapped onto the PCB.
