These days many users rely on the Ethernet for efficient communication in machinery and equipment manufacturing. Ethernet and/or Power-over-Ethernet networks – both have now become indispensable for communication with large volumes of data. Their sensitivity towards electrical disturbances, such as lightning and surge voltages, should be considered with corresponding protection concepts. VARITECTOR DATA CAT6 from Weidmüller is a surge voltage protection device for Ethernet applications. The device protects communication networks from damage resulting from lightning strikes and transient surge voltages and thereby ensures the quality and reliability of data transfer. The malfunctions caused by surge voltages may result in the failure of entire systems and therefore restrict operations in the long term. A protected power supply, regular data backups and last but not least an effective surge voltage protection concept are now considered standard in attaining good reliability. The new VARITECTOR DATA CAT6 Ethernet surge voltage protection device is suited to large volumes of data and provides protection for up to 250 MHz (class E); it is downwardly compatible with Cat.5 (up to 100 MHz). Thanks to increased limit frequency, the application range for the surge voltage protection device extends from 250 MHz to 1GBASE-T.
VARITECTOR DATA CAT6 is designed for four pairs of wires with a RJ45 bush. The surge voltage protection device protects both Ethernet and Power-over-Ethernet networks – it is suited to PoE (according to IEEE 802.3af) and PoE+ (according to IEEE 802.3at). The cables available as options from Weidmüller are sized so well that power received by Power-over-Ethernet can also be transferred to other devices.
A robust metal housing provides reliable protection and minimises susceptibility to interference. The durable IP20 device has external dimensions of 75 mm x 19 mm x 46 mm (H x W x D) and is simply mounted on a carrier rail.
VARITECTOR DATA CAT6 corresponds to requirement class C2/ D1 according to IEC 61643-21, peak current capacity C2 is 5 kA, D1 is 1 kA. The module is designed for maximum continuous voltage Vc (DC) of 60 V. Its rated current is 1 A. The protective device responds within 1 ns and returns to its idle setting in less than 1 ns. The module can be operated at ambient temperatures between -40 °C and +80 °C.
