BPMN ist eine Modellierungstechnik zur Darstellung von Geschäftsprozessen in Form eines Diagramms. Sie wurde ursprünglich von Steven White, einem ehemaligen IBM-Entwickler, konzipiert und entwickelt und ist den bisherigen Darstellungsformen wie Aktivitäts-, Flussdiagrammen oder ereignisgesteuerten Prozessketten (EPKn) überlegen. Heute ist der OMG-Standard eine etablierte Standardnotation sowie ISO-Norm, die zur Darstellung zur sowie Automatisierung von Geschäftsprozessen genutzt wird.

Die BPMN überzeugt aufgrund ihrer definierten Regeln (Syntax) sowie ihrer interpretationsfreien Deutung (Semantik) und bildet die gemeinsame Sprache des fachlichen Prozessmanagements und der IT.
