Eine Qualitätsmanagementnorm beschreibt und definiert die Anforderungen an ein Managementsystem einer Organisation. Die Anforderungen sind branchenneutral formuliert und sprechen Unternehmen aus Industrie, Dienstleistung, Handel und öffentlichen Einrichtungen an. Die Umsetzung der Anforderungen mündet in einem Qualitätsmanagementsystems. In der Regel wird das Qualitätsmanagementsystem nach ISO 9001:2015 von einer unabhängigen dritten Stelle begutachtet. Wird der Organisation die Umsetzung der Anforderung bescheinigt erhält das Unternehmen ein entsprechendes ISO 9001:2015 Zertifikat.
