In moderne Fahrzeuge werden immer mehr Funktionen elektronisch unterstützt um damit leistungsfähigere Funktionen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dabei steht die Software solcher elektronischer Systeme im Vordergrund. Ohne Software bewegt sich ein modernes Auto keinen Millimeter. Dabei sind viele dieser Funktionen sicherheitskritisch, d.h. sie können Schäden an Mensch und Umgebung verursachen. Automotive Software unterscheidet sich dabei oft von klassischer Software. Sie ist meist eingebettet, d.h. fest mit einem technischen Prozess verbunden. Im Laufe der Jahre sind viele Standards entstanden, die bei der Softwareentwicklung beachtet werden sollten.
