Polypropylen (PP) ist der am meisten verwendete Kunststoff weltweit. Das liegt an den hervorragenden mechanischen Eigenschaften und dem attraktiven Preis. Aus diesem Grund wird er von der Industrie häufig in der Serienproduktion verwendet.

Die Hauptanwendung des Lasersinterns (SLS) ist die Prototypen- und Kleinserienfertigung auf Basis von Polyamidpulver (PA). Daher sind Prototypen nicht mit den Endteilen aus der Serienproduktion vergleichbar. Darüber hinaus ist Polyamid teurer als PP, so dass das Lasersintern nicht konkurrenzfähig ist, insbesondere im Vergleich zum Spritzgussverfahren.
