Im Juni 2012 verringerte airberlin im Rahmen des Effizienzsteigerungsprogramms "Shape & Size" ihre Kapazität um weitere 3,8 Prozent auf 4.172.956 Sitzplätze. Gleichzeitig ging die Auslastung von Deutschlands zweitgrößter Fluggesellschaft leicht auf 79,03 Prozent zurück (Juni 2011: 80,03 Prozent). Der Passagierrückgang ist auf die kurzfristig angekündigte Rückverlagerung des Berliner Flugverkehrs vom zukünftigen Flughafen BER zurück nach Berlin-Tegel und die damit verbundenen Flugplanveränderungen zurückzuführen. Insgesamt begrüßte airberlin im Juni 2012 3.297.750 Fluggäste an Bord. Das entspricht einem Minus von 5,0 Prozent (Juni 2011: 3.471.923 Fluggäste).

Von Januar bis Juni stieg die Auslastung um 1,9 Prozentpunkte, von 75,3 Prozent auf 77,2 Prozent.
