Bei BMW kommen seit kurzem crashaktive Kopfstützen zum Einsatz, deren kinematisches Skelett überwiegend aus technischen Kunststoffen der BASF besteht. Das Kunststoffgerüst wird von ITW in einer vollautomatischen Montagefabrik in Röttingen gefertigt und anschließend bei Grammer, Amberg, zur Kopfstütze komplettiert. Die BASF hat ITW dabei nicht nur mit den Werkstoffen Ultradur® B4300 G6 (PBT), Ultramid® B3EG3 (PA 6), Ultramid A3K (PA 66) und dem TPU Elastollan®, sondern auch mit CAE-Berechnungen und Kopfaufpralltests unterstützt.

Das Bauteil soll die Passagiere noch besser gegen Schleudertraumata schützen: Bei einem Heckaufprall von mehr als 12 km/h wird automatisch ein Aktuator in der Kopfstütze ausgelöst.
