Krebspulsar strahlt mit unerwartet hoher Energie

Physikalische Modelle von Pulsaren müssen überdacht werden

Zum ersten Mal haben Forscher von einem Pulsar ausgehende Gammastrahlen ungeahnt hoher Energien nachgewiesen. Die Gammastrahlen des Krebspulsars mit Energien von über 100 Milliarden Elektronenvolt (100 GeV) wurden von den VERITAS-Teleskopen am Whipple-Observatorium im US-Bundesstaat Arizona gemessen. Ihre Existenz widerspricht allen bisherigen Modellen von Pulsaren. Die Ergebnisse des internationalen Teams von Astrophysikern unter Beteiligung von Physikern des Forschungszentrums DESY in Zeuthen hat das Fachmagazin Science am Freitag veröffentlicht.

Der Krebspulsar ist ein sich schnell drehender Neutronenstern, der kollabierte Kern eines schweren Sterns.
