Mit 3D Sensoren lassen sich heutzutage viele Anwendungen lösen, die in der Vergangenheit als unmöglich zu lösen galten. 3D-Verfahren mit einer Höhenvermessung bzw. volumetrischen Messung waren vor ein paar Jahren noch zu ungenau, zu teuer und zu langsam. Die technische Weiterentwicklung allerdings brachte der Branche bessere Sensoren und auswertende Hardware. Je nach Technologie erlaubt dies eine Höhenvermessung der Bauelemente, der IC-Pins und der Lötstellen.

Der EyeScan VR 3D Sensor beispielsweise arbeitet mit Streifenprojektion. Dabei wird das Licht streifenförmig auf das Objekt projiziert und erzeugt aufgrund der Höhenstruktur des Objekts ein Lichtmuster, das von einer in bekanntem Winkel angeordneten Kamera aufgenommen ybim.
