Meerwasser gibt es in rauen Mengen, Trinkwasser dagegen ist knapp. Entsalzungsanlagen können das Meerwasser umwandeln. Für diese Anlagen braucht man jedoch Rohre aus einem Spezialstahl oder Titan - teures Material, das immer schwerer zu beschaffen ist.
