Die Konvergenz von Software und Hardware sowie die Vernetzung eingebetteter Systeme verlangt nach adäquaten Entwicklungsmethoden. Im Rahmen des Projekts SPRINT entwickeln Forscher am Fraunhofer FOKUS eine Plattform, die einen einfachen Wechsel zwischen realer und simulierter Hardware erlaubt. Auf diese Weise lassen sich Entwicklungsprozesse in weltweit verteilten Teams eng miteinander verzahnen. Insbesondere wenn die aufwendige Hardwareentwicklung einen wesentlichen Teil des Gesamtaufwands umfasst, lassen sich mit SPRINT erhebliche Kosten sparen, da die Software den Aufwand für Integrationszyklen von unterschiedlichen Systemteilen reduziert.
