Die Fertigung von mikroelektronischen Systemen ist ein hartes Business, zumindest für die Elektronik selbst. Chips mit mikrometerkleinen Strukturen werden beim Verkapseln mit Drücken über 100 kg/cm² beaufschlagt und bei der Lötmontage Temperaturschwankungen von mehreren Hundert Grad Celsius ausgesetzt. In fünf bis zehn Prozent führt nicht selten allein der Fertigungsprozess dazu, dass trotz einwandfreier Bauteile einzelne Systemkomponenten durch Dehnungen zu stark belastet werden und folglich ausfallen.

Große Elektronikzulieferer wie Bosch suchen daher seit Jahren nach einem Messsystem, das die mechanische Belastung von Mikrosystemen online erfassen kann. In dem BMBF-Verbundprojekt iForceSens ist ein solches System entwickelt worden.
