Die Nanotechnologie wird als Schlüsselindustrie des 21. Jahrhunderts angesehen. Rund 30 Staaten haben Forschungsprogramme zur systematischen Förderung der Nanotechnologie aufgelegt. In der Volksrepublik China gehört die Nanotechnologie zu den wichtigsten Wissenschaftsprojekten des Landes und wird verstärkt von der Regierung gefördert. 2012 investierte China rund 1,8 Milliarden Euro in die Forschung und Entwicklung im Bereich der Nanotechnologie. Mit Blick auf diese Entwicklung bieten sich zahlreiche Potenziale für deutsche Anbieter im Bereich der Nanotechnologie in Greater China.
