Optische Atomuhr: langer Blick auf die gefangenen Atome

Optische Uhren könnten die Atomuhren der Zukunft werden. Ihr "Pendel", also der regelmäßige Schwingungsvorgang, den jede Uhr braucht, ist eine Schwingung im Bereich sichtbaren Lichts. Weil dessen Frequenz höher ist als bei den Mikrowellenschwingungen der Cäsium-Atomuhren, erwarten Physiker noch einmal eine Steigerung in der Genauigkeit, Stabilität und Zuverlässigkeit. Bei einer der Kandidatinnen für eine optische Uhr, die in der PTB entwickelt wird, werden Strontiumatome im Interferenzmuster zweier Laserstrahlen festgehalten. In diesem so genannten "optischen Gitter" kann dann das atomare "Pendel", d.h. die Absorptionsfrequenz der Atome, sehr genau gemessen werden.
