Der Energieträger Gas ist nach wie vor die beliebteste Energiequelle zum Heizen. Laut dem Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft e.V. (BDEW) betrug der Anteil von Erdgas, Flüssiggas (Propan) und Bioerdgas im Jahr 2016 rund 49 Prozent im deutschen Wohnungsbestand.
