Nach dem Abschluss seines Studium an der Ecole Polytechnique und der Ecole des Mines in Paris, begann Séverin Cabannes seine berufliche Laufbahn im Jahre 1983 bei dem Finanzdienstleister Crédit National. Danach hatte er bei Elf Atochem verschiedene verantwortungsvolle Positionen inne, die ihn schließlich zum Leiter des Bereichs “Wirtschaft und Strategische Planung" führten. 1997 wechselte Séverin Cabannes zunächst als Leiter “Strategische Planung" zu La Poste und wurde dort 1998 zum Finanzvorstand, stellvertretenden Geschäftsführer und zum Mitglied der Geschäftsleitung ernannt. Anfang 2001 wechselte Séverin Cabannes als Finanzvorstand und Mitglied der Geschäftsleitung zu Société Générale. Am 3.
