Nobelpreisträger Peter Grünberg, der in Darmstadt studierte und promovierte, beobachtete zur Jahreswende 1987/1988 erstmals den "Riesenmagnetwiderstandseffekt". Grünberg und sein Jülicher Institutsleiter erkannten rasch die Anwendbarkeit des Effekts und beschlossen, ein Patent anzumelden. Nur neun Jahre nach der Entdeckung des Effektes brachte IBM ein fertiges Produkt auf den Markt: Eine Festplatte mit einer Kapazität von zehn Gigabyte. - Für die damalige Zeit ein Quantensprung. Dadurch sicherte sich das Forschungszentrum Lizenzeinnahmen in zweistelliger Millionenhöhe.
