Passend zum Wissenschaftsjahr 2010 mit dem Motto "Die Zukunft der Energie" widmet sich die Universität Stuttgart in ihrem neuen Themenheft Forschung dem Thema "Erneuerbare Energien". Das Zukunftspotential in diesen für Wirtschaft, Umwelt und Gesellschaft gleichermaßen bedeutenden Schlüsseltechnologien ist enorm: Alleine für Deutschland sagt das Bundesumweltministerium ein jährliches Investitionsvolumen von 12 Milliarden Euro voraus, und die ökologischen Effekte sind mit Geld gar nicht aufzuwiegen. Die Universität Stuttgart hat diese Entwicklung früh aufgegriffen und das Thema "Nachhaltige Energieversorgung und Umwelt" zu einem ihrer Forschungsschwerpunkte gemacht. Mehr als ein Fünftel der Fördergelder der Europäischen Union im Bereich "nachhaltige Energiesysteme" gingen an die Universität.
