Die Lübesse Energie GmbH wurde 2019 als Projektgesellschaft für die Planung und Errichtung einer Power-to-X-Anlage in Lübesse gegründet. Power-to-X steht für die Umwandlung von Strom (Power) in andere Energieformen und Stoffe (X). Dies ermöglicht auch die Verwendung des Stroms in anderen Energiesektoren, zum Beispiel im Verkehr oder zum Heizen (Sektorenkopplung). In der Energiewandlungsanlage Lübesse soll Windstrom durch Elektrolyse von Wasser zur Herstellung von grünem Wasserstoff genutzt werden. In einem weiteren Schritt wird aus dem Wasserstoff, zusammen mit biogenem Kohlendioxid, synthetisches Methan. Methan kann als Erdgasersatz genutzt werden. In Lübesse soll es zu grünem LNG verflüssigt werden. Das LNG kann beispielsweise als Kraftstoff im Schwerlastverkehr genutzt werden. Die bei den Umwandlungsprozessen in der Energiewandlungsanlage anfallende Prozesswärme soll für eine örtliche Nahwärmeversorgung bereitgestellt werden.
