Protolabs wurde 1999 von Larry Lukis, einem erfolgreichen Unternehmer und Computerfreak, gegründet, der die Zeit für die Bereitstellung von Prototypen im Spritzguss aus Kunststoff radikal reduzieren wollte. Seine Lösung bestand in der Automation des traditionellen Herstellungsverfahrens durch die Entwicklung komplexer Software, die mit einem Netz aus Fräsmaschinen und Spritzguss-Pressen kommunizierte. Sie bewirkte, dass Kunststoff- und Metallteile in einem Bruchteil der zuvor erforderlichen Zeit produziert werden konnten.

In den darauffolgenden zehn Jahren entwickelten wir unsere Spritzgussmöglichkeiten weiter, führten ein Express-Verfahren für CNC-Bearbeitung ein und eröffneten Produktionsanlagen in Europa und in Japan. 2014 brachten wir industriegeeignete 3D-Druckdienste auf den Markt, um Produktentwicklern, Designern, Ingenieuren und Konstrukteuren den Weg von ersten Prototypen bis zur Kleinserienherstellung zu erleichtern.

Protolabs ist heute mit Fertigungseinrichtungen in sieben Ländern weltweit schnellster Hersteller von kundenspezifischen Prototypen und in Kleinserienfertigung produzierten Teilen.
