Der Status als Zugelassener Wirtschaftsbeteiligter „AEO" ist eine zollrechtliche Bewilligung, ausgehend von der europäischen Kommission (Generaldirektion Steuern und Zollunion), mit dem Unionszollkodex (UZK) und dessen Durchführungsverordnung (IA) und Delegierten Verordnung (DA) verankert. Dadurch hat das Konzept des zugelassenen Wirtschaftsbeteiligten international an Bedeutung gewonnen. Grundlegend wird der AEO-Status im globalen Güterverkehr als ein Gütesiegel angesehen.
