- The Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ostwestfalen visits arvato Systems
- arvato company demonstrates new approaches for the efficient use of energy in data centers
‘Change Management – Change Your Thinking to Achieve Success’ was the motto of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s first Meeting of the Minds event, which took place on 23 April 2013 at arvato Systems in Gütersloh. Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ostwestfalen, Energie Impuls OWL, and companies from the Ostwestfalen region exchanged ideas and experiences on diverse topics related to the ‘Learning Energy Efficiency Network,’ or LEEN.
Climate change, rising energy costs, and a shortage of resources are forcing more and more companies to think about using energy in a more efficient manner. LEEN consists of 26 companies working together through two networks in Ostwestfalen and regularly exchanging ideas and experiences on issues related to energy efficiency. Peter Brünler, a representative from Energie Impuls OWL, spoke about the potential efficiency savings that has already been identified from over 350 measures. Implementing them could mean investments of around €9 million, yet the annual savings could be nearly €3.4 million. Energie Impuls OWL and consulting engineering companies would support the companies throughout the implementation process.
Markus Schwarz, Head of Data Center Technology, described the impact of implementing the measures in the data centers of arvato Systems, a LEEN member. Over 650 racks were housed on a data center space covering 2,000 m² in order to optimize cooling. Completely separating hot and cold air areas has already resulted in annual energy savings of almost 60 percent. Together, all of the measures implemented in the arvato Systems data centers in 2011 resulted in savings of over 2,100,000 KWh or 1,180 metric tons of CO², compared to the previous year.
As part of the ongoing further development of the data centers, arvato Systems has a number of further goals that strive to promote the efficient, sustainable use of energy. One of the many measures planned for 2013 involves the expansion of outside cooling in one of the data centers. Electrical cooling is no longer necessary if the outdoor temperature is eight degrees or below.
arvato Systems’ data center covers an area of approximately 5,000 m² (roughly equivalent to the size of a soccer field) and now operates in an energy-efficient manner, as proven by its Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) value of just 1.56.
