Gegenüber der Vorjahresbefragung wurden eine Reihe von Instrumenten deutlich geringer eingesetzt, darunter Werbung in Fachzeitschriften. Zugenommen haben der Persönliche Verkauf, Direct Mailing und der Vertrieb über das Internet.
Investitionsgüteraussteller und Konsumgüteraussteller unterscheiden sich deutlich in der Nutzung der Marketing-Instrumente außerhalb von Messen: So nutzen Firmen aus dem Investitionsgüterbereich vor allem den Persönlichen Verkauf (91 %), Direct Mailing (90 %) und Werbung in Fachzeitschriften 76 %, setzen jedoch nur relativ wenig auf Vertrieb und Verkauf per Internet (45 %). Von den Konsumgüterausstellern nutzen 87 % das Instrument Direct Mailing, 75 % den Außendienst, 65 % Werbung in Fachzeitschriften und immerhin 64 % den Verkauf und Vertrieb über das Internet. Bei der Nutzung von Social Media unterscheiden sich die Sektoren eher wenig: 18 % der Konsumgüteraussteller und 15 % der Invesitionsgüteraussteller sind auf Xing, Facebook oder Twitter unterwegs.
