When Daniel Libeskind designs a building, the result is often spectacular – the Jewish Museum in Berlin, for example, or the World Trade Center Memorial Towers in New York. The star architect’s satisfaction was even greater with “Złota” because this time he had the chance to design a landmark for his Polish homeland.
The sweeping profile of the 200-metre-high apartment building is particularly striking to the observer’s eye. It certainly begs the question whether classical rectangular skyscrapers do not lack a certain imagination nowadays.
The exterior visual impact of such an impressive structure, which will contain 250 luxury apartments upon completion, depends entirely on its façade, however, since few observers will be giving much more thought to the unremarkable reinforced steel support structure after a while. The dynamic design of the building required an appropriate façade system, the individual elements of which had to be fabricated in special shapes and dimensions for many areas of the building. This is where Sapa, a Swedish manufacturer of façade elements, came into the picture. The actual design and layout of the façade elements was handled by the Kyotec Group’s subsidiary in Warsaw, Poland, while the Belgian job coater Blyweert was responsible for coating them with an Alesta® AP RAL 9010 Matt Smooth and NCS S0515-R80B Fine Textured from DuPont. This project involved a considerable order volume – 87,000 m² of façade and 13 tonnes of powder coating had to be processed.
Spectacular façade
In view of the prestigious construction and of the façade elements, some of which were individually matched for a specific area of the building, the stability of the coating and pre-treatment process was an absolute priority. No risk could be tolerated here with regard to the long-term stability of the façade – and the selection of a renowned powder supplier bears this out.
The Alesta® family of coatings from DuPont has been formulated specially for aluminium and galvanised steel applications. This development focused on providing excellent mechanical and weathering resistance characteristics. That’s why Alesta® coatings, which are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001, are ideally suited for coating façade elements. The Alesta® AP series includes full-gloss, semi-gloss and matt powder coatings, which are also available with additional effects ranging from metallic to fine textured.
In what was hopefully a pointer to a successful future, the ambitious construction project earned the European Property Award from the world-renowned business news broadcaster CNBC in 2008.
After all, despite construction permit problems and the global financial crisis delaying progress for a while, “Złota” is now scheduled to be completed in 2013.
