Die Leiterbahnen stellen die elektrischen Verbindungen zu den Bauteilen her. Bauelemente werden konventiuell in Bohrungen verlötet, oder bei SMD-Bauteilen auf Lötflächen über Bestückungsautomaten bestückt und dann Infrarot gelötet.
Leiterplatten bestehen aus einem Trägermaterial, meist FR4, welches elektrisch isoliert. Bei 2 Lagen Schaltungen sind auf Top, sowie Bottom Kupferschichten aufgebracht. Standardmäßig ist das Startkupfer 17µm und wird im Prozess auf 35µm aufgekupfert , in Verbindung mit der Durchkontaktierung. Das Basismaterial besteht aus Glasfasermatten mit Epoxidharz getränkt. Grund gerade dieses Material auszuwählen, besteht in der Tatsache der sehr guten Leitfähigkeit in Bezug auf eine bessere Kriechstromfestigkeit. Bei Spezialanwendungen wird auch Teflon oder Keramik verwendet. Der Entwurf von Leiterplatten erfolgt heute nur über CAD Software.Nach erfolgter Layouterstellung werden Gerberdaten (Standard - Extended-Gerber 274X), sowie Bohrdaten (Standard - Exellon) für die Produktion erzeugt.
