Heute gibt es eine weltweit vernetzte Demoszene, die ihre Werke über das Internet austauscht, und sich zu internationalen „Wettkämpfen“ trifft, um sich zum Beispiel zu beweisen, wer die eindrucksvollsten Effekte in eine Datei von nur 64 Kilobyte Größe zu stecken vermag. „Die Demoszene ist unglaublich kreativ - und weil sie stark von Programmierern geprägt ist, hat sie eine ganz eigene Ästhetik entwickelt“, sagt Festival-Leiter Aaron Koenig. „Wir haben ihr daher als erstes Filmfestival der Welt einen eigenen Wettbewerb gewidmet, denn wir finden, dass sie reif dafür ist, sich vor einem ganz normalen Publikum zu präsentieren.“
„Die meisten Demos kommen aus Finnland, Osteuropa und Deutschland“, bemerkt Tim Rittmann vom Bitfilm-Programmteam. „Wahrscheinlich sind lange, dunkle Winternächte für die Produktion genialer Demos förderlich.“
Das Bitfilm-Festival zeigt seit dem Jahr 2000 Filme, die digitale Technologie auf kreative und innovative Weise einsetzen. Mit zuletzt über 870 Einreichungen aus 48 Ländern gilt es als eines der bedeutendsten internationalen Festivals für digitalen Film.
Alle Filme des Festivals stehen ab Juni 2006 im Internet unter www.bitfilm.com/festival zur Abstimmung. Der mehrtägige Live Event in Hamburg Anfang September umfasst neben der Preisverleihung auch Workshops, VJ Parties und das Mobile Multimedia Forum für Film, TV und Games auf mobilen Endgeräten. Das Bitfilm-Festival ist ferner ganzjährig mit Gastprogrammen auf internationalen Festivals und Fachveranstaltungen präsent.
