„Damals wurden wir noch ein wenig belächelt“, erinnert sich Aaron Koenig. „Filme auf den kleinen Bildschirmen von Handys, das konnte sich 2003 kaum jemand vorstellen - es gab ja auch nur wenige Geräte, auf denen es funktionierte.“
Mittlerweile ist die Videofunktion im Handy Standard. Die großen Netzbetreiber haben eigene Handy-TV-Kanäle gestartet, auf denen man neben News und Sport auch Filme aus dem Hause Bitfilm sehen kann. Die Landesmedienanstalten schreiben eigene Frequenzen fürs Handy-TV aus. Um diese neuen technischen Möglichkeiten mit Inhalten zu füllen, ruft das Bitfilm-Festival zum vierten Mal Kreative zum Micromovie-Wettbewerb auf.
Parallel dazu veranstaltet Bitfilm gemeinsam mit der Hamburgischen Anstalt für Neue Medien (federführend für das DVB-H-Pilotprojekt in Norddeutschland) das Mobile-Multimedia-Forum, bei dem Produktionsfirmen ihre Projekte für Film, TV und Games auf dem Handy vor den großen Playern der Mobilbranche präsentieren können.
Das Bitfilm-Festival zeigt seit dem Jahr 2000 Filme, die digitale Technologie auf kreative und innovative Weise einsetzen. Mit zuletzt über 870 Einreichungen aus 48 Ländern gilt es als eines der bedeutendsten internationalen Festivals für digitalen Film.
Alle Filme des Festivals stehen ab Juni 2006 im Internet unter www.bitfilm.com/festival zur Abstimmung. Der mehrtägige Live Event in Hamburg Anfang September umfasst neben der Preisverleihung auch Workshops, VJ Parties und das Mobile Multimedia Forum für Film, TV und Games auf mobilen Endgeräten. Das Bitfilm-Festival ist ferner ganzjährig mit Gastprogrammen auf internationalen Festivals und Fachveranstaltungen präsent.
